WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS COMMENTARY

“FREE SPIRITS” BY ANN SULLIVAN (WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS COMMENTARY)

“FREE SPIRITS” LIMITED EDITION PRINT BY CAPE COD ARTIST ANN SULLIVAN

“Come away O human child

To the waters and the wild!

With a faery, hand in hand,

For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand……WB Yeats

In Ireland of old folk tales of fairies kidnapping children were used to frighten children into good behavior, preying on their fear of separation from their family. But in Yeats lovely poem the fairies intention is only to protect the children and bring them to a world of no hurt and no harm.

Would that WE could  keep every child safe from the troubles  and evil in our world.

The “faeries” of  water and the sea call children and the child in each of us to come and escape and refresh at the shore, in the waters and in boats. This is the reason I paint  the water and the children and the boats and the shore and all the rest. Ann Sullivan
